Independent Living

Independent Living Facilities are also known as Retirement Communities, Senior Living Communities, Active Lifestyle Communities, Senior Housing and/or Senior Apartment Living.  This type of housing is often more compact, to improve navigation within the home, and offers safety features such as handrails in the bathroom and a 24-hour personal emergency response system.  Independent Living Facilities are ideal for active seniors, who are hoping to increase their social situation in part, because these facilities frequently have a shared dining facility where all residents can have their meals and usually offer a full range of on-site and off-site activities. In addition, many independent living communities offer minor assistance with regard to household chores and upkeep, and in running errands in town.

Independent Living Facilities Costs

Independent living costs vary, depending on the type of residence with an additional fee for special services. Costs also vary by geography.  Typical services include monthly rent and all-inclusive utilities, except local telephone services and cable; community dining services for one to three daily meals; maintenance repairs; general housekeeping services; a monthly schedule of socially-engaging activities and transportation to and from various appointments and activities.  Keep in mind, each community will have slightly different costs and services, so it’s important to ask specific questions of each community.
